Bardenas Reales by car: how to plan the route

The map before the satnav

Download the plan from the park’s brochures page and cross-check it with recent notices. A map shows the network of routes; it does not certify that every stretch is open today.

Note your entry and exit. Two articles can quote different distances for “the Bardenas loop” because they start in different places. Do not use a figure without knowing which route it measures.

Documented routes: start and end

Visit Navarra describes two main car circuits and advises against sports cars and mini cars:

• From Arguedas (N-134), the roughly 25 km track around the Bardena Blanca, including Castildetierra. Their indication: about 2 hours for a first visit. Logical start: information centre, Finca de los Aguilares, entry from NA-8712 km 0.8.
• From Carcastillo, entry via El Paso, a track that joins the perimeter road. On 14 September 2026 the park still listed the Perimetral–El Paso stretch as closed: check before using it as your finish.

Stop only in marked places and beside authorised routes, without blocking traffic. Ask the centre for current parking. Access gates are detailed in the Spanish and French arrival guides.

A day without rushing

1. Before leaving, check the weather, notices and fuel.
2. On arrival, confirm the route at the information centre if it is open.
3. Follow only the authorised itinerary, with a few well-chosen stops.
4. Keep a comfortable margin to leave and reach your accommodation.

This is an organisational suggestion, not turn-by-turn navigation. Signage and instructions on the ground take priority.

Check your vehicle

If you hire a car, read the contract: a track that allows traffic does not mean the hire insurance covers its use. If your vehicle is very low or bulky, ask for advice and describe its characteristics.

Do not enter a doubtful passage to “see if it goes”. Postponing the visit or booking a accompanied outing may be more suitable.

If the tracks change

Never bypass a barrier on a secondary track. Have an alternative activity nearby and reschedule the visit if needed.
