Tudela and Ribera vegetables

Visit Navarra puts Tudela 14 km from the Bardenas. It is the town with the railway station and the biggest base. Its page (in Spanish) highlights the Plaza de los Fueros, the Jewish quarter, the Torre Monreal, the Cerro de Santa Bárbara and the Gothic cathedral of Santa María, with its Last Judgement portal and Romanesque cloister; you enter through the Museo de Tudela.

To eat: the Tudela artichoke has its own designation of origin and the signature dish is menestra, a vegetable stew. The Fiestas de la Verdura ran from 17 April to 3 May 2026; the 2027 date was still pending on 7/10/2026.

Next to the park: Sendaviva and La Oliva

Sendaviva (Arguedas) is a nature and leisure park “next to the Bardenas Reales Natural Park”, with more than 800 animals along 8 trails, according to Visit Navarra. It opens in seasons: dates and tickets on its website. It is the obvious plan B with children.

La Oliva monastery (Carcastillo), north of the Bardenas, still home to monks. Visit Navarra highlights the Cistercian church, the Gothic cloister and the chapter house. Carcastillo is also the El Paso side: if that access is closed, the monastery saves the morning. Hours on the monastery’s website.

Olite and Ujué, medieval Navarre

The Royal Palace of Olite has been a national monument since 1925; the New Palace is open to visitors and the Old Palace is now a Parador hotel. Tickets and guided tours at its online ticket office.

Ujué is a stone village topped by the fortress-sanctuary of Santa María, with views over the Ribera and the Pyrenees. Visit Navarra recommends migas de pastor (shepherd’s fried breadcrumbs) and caramelised almonds. Olite and Ujué fit together in one day: the natural second day of two days in the Bardenas.

When to use this guide as a plan B

The park advises against entering after rain has damaged the tracks, and in October there are closures for the Blue Rally (22, 23, 29 and 30), the Spain Classic Raid (23), weekend hunting from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and air exercises. It is all in the park notices and summarised in when to visit.

If the day goes wrong: morning in Tudela or La Oliva, Bardenas in the afternoon if the notices allow. We do not publish drive times between villages: they depend on the route and traffic.

A base for all of this

Fustiñana sits between the Bardena Negra and Tudela. That is where El Balcón del Moncayo is, with the same owner as this guide. Other options: where to stay.
